Wawrinka stuns Djokovic for Roland Garros victory

ITF - International Tennis Federation - 6/14/2015 11:52:24 AM

Stan Wawrinka produced a shock four-set victory over world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the final of Roland Garros to claim his second Grand Slam title.

The world No. 8 fought back from a set down to win the match 46 64 63 64 and become only the second Swiss player to lift the Roland Garros trophy after Roger Federer in 2009.

Djokovic looked to be on course to secure the career Grand Slam after he took the opening set with relative ease, however Wawrinka soon came storming back. He produced a series of stunning winners to leave Djokovic looking for answers and secured the second set on his fifth break point.

The 2014 Australian Open winner remained in control throughout the third set, soon leading the eight-time Grand Slam champion by two sets to one. The match looked to be going the distance after Djokovic surged to a 3-0 lead in set four, but Wawrinka was soon back on equal terms after producing some breath-taking shots. He went on to secure victory with one of his trademark backhands down the line.

"It is amazing, for sure. I still have problem to really realise that I won the French Open, because it's always the same after winning big title. You are a little bit lost in your mind," said Wawrinka, who will rise to No. 4 in the rankings following his victory.

"I'm proud of winning tonight against - today against Novak. He's such a tough player to play, especially in final. I have a lot of respect to him and his team. He's a great friend."
